I have a laptop with an external monitor. The external monitor is the default display. Until recently everything worked well.

Now, however, I am using a projector on occasion. After using the projector, my laptop's resolution is changed and thus my desktop is changed. Is there any way to save the original resolution, icon layout and dual monitor configuration so I can restore it after using the projector?

There are several good free utilities out there to manage icons and parts of what you want. A couple are Iconoid and Fences. I have been using Iconoid and manually resetting my monitor resolutions.

Iconoid is an oldie but a goodie (second opinion).
