changing name in 'from' line (5.0)

How do I change the name which appears in the "From" line? Although the program is registered to me, I often send messages on behalf of my non-keyboarding partner and want his, not my, name to appear on the messages from him.

Open Outlook Express and on the menu click on TOOLS, ACCOUNTS, and PROPERTIES where it says "User Information, Name" this is where you put what you want to show in the From line.

Make any change you want and be sure to click on the APPLY button.

Thank you! It worked perfectly!! Now, to change back to my name, do I just do the same thing or is there some easy way (as yet unknown to me!) for having my partner's name and my name easily interchangeable?

    Appreciate your prompt response!!

I should think the best way for you and your partner to have your own settings would be for you to have separate accounts set up in OE. Then you would simply go to the appropriate account. This would, however, also separate all the emails, ie yours are only visible when your account is open and your partner's when that account is open.

Otherwise yes, you'll need to repeat the procedure to put your name back in.

Aha! Now I understand. Since I look after most of our emailing, even when it is sent under my partner' s name, it sounds like a better idea to just have one name and one account so all the email is in one place. Thank you for clarifying and simplifying this issue for me. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Actually, the mail from multiple accounts will display all together in one place.

Under Tools, Accounts, add additional accounts - they can have the same email address, pop, etc, but different display names. This will also work using mail from different addresses. All this mail should get delivered to the Inbox.

Once the additional accounts are set up, the New Message window will display a drop-down list at the top, allowing you to choose which account you are sending from.

If mail from all accounts is not being received, use Tools, Send & Receive, Send & Receive All (Ctrl+M).

You could also create a rules that would color code the different account messages, or move them to specific folders.

Re: changing name in 'from' line (5.0)

Well, on my machine all the accounts (unless I'm using the wrong name) are completely separate - to see mail from another account I have to go to that account - which is what I wanted.

I vaguely remember there is something else you can do to show everything in one place but I can't remember any details ...

How are you switching to the other accounts?

As I suspected, I was using the wrong name. I use Identities, and these are kept entirely separate (File, Switch Identities to go from one to another).

I haven't used Identities - is anything shared, like address book, or rules?

I'm at work at the moment and can't check (no OE even installed, here!). Rules definitely no, address book I don't think so but you can import address book and emails from one identity to another.

The idea of the identities is that they are completely separate and don't interfere/overlap at all, as I understand it. That's certainly what I use it for.

Yes, that is helpful. Thanks. I haven't used that feature, appreciate getting your input on it.

Thanks for the detailed suggestions. Have printed them out to try on my own. It's about time I ventured into more challenges with our email account!
