Locking footer? (2000 SR-1)

Is there a way to lock or password-protect a footer so that people cannot change the text in the footer, but have full control over the rest of the document?

I searched through the archive and found the following suggestion: One way to protect the headers only, without code, is to create a document, and put a continuous section break in the first character of the document. Then protect the document for forms- Tools, Protect, Forms, click on sections. Then untick section 2. Also put a password in the protect.

I tried this for the footer and was able to get the footer password-protected. However, Page Setup, Bullet Formatting and other menu options were no longer available, even within the text that wasn't password protected.

I'm trying to keep the copyright and author information on a document that others should be able to modify to fit their own needs.

Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch!
That will enable users to change document text without changing the header.

mishj,
I'm glad you said why you were trying to lock the footer... otherwise that would have been my question. I don't know how to do what you are asking but I have a suggestion about fixing the author and copyright information so that the user would not be able to change it - or at least you'd know if it had been messed with.

Would it be feasible to create a graphic, with all the information that goes in the footer - maybe add your company logo (or with some nuance so it's not so easy to recreate) - and insert that into the footer. This way the author has complete control of the document but if they try to mess with the footer they would have to create a new graphic to go there.

It's an idea (based on the info here) if no one else knows how to do what you'd like.
have fun

See this article by MS MVP Bill Coan for a way to do this using VBA.

Also, when you protect a document for forms you lose the Undo stack, so changes made can't be undone once the Protect is done.
