In Word 2002, I have a lot of single captial letters sorrounded by quotes, e.g., "A" "B", etc. How would a phrase a search and replace to remove the quotes and leave the letters?

When you turn wildcards on you need to search for the correct smart quote. This solution puts either option in front or after the capital letter
    Find []([A-Z])[]
    Replace with: \1

Have a look at this page for info in typing the directional quotes into the find box
