    Outlook 2000 won't open (WinMe - Office 2000 Premium)

Outlook 2000 has been working fine for the past year or so, this morning all it will do is show the splash screen and freeze - only way out is to three finger salute and 'end task'. I've tried repair/fix via Word, but still no dice. All I can think of is maybe a locked file?? but where??
    Thanks for any assist.

When did you do a cold boot last?

I have had this happen and you will find that it is running, but you can NOT get to it. So, if I do a complete shut down and then fire it (the computer) back up and wait for the complet start to complete, Outlook will be back.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Outlook 2000 won't open (WinMe - Office 2000 Premium)

I run Norton religiously, but for the heck of it I did a manual (all files) scan.. came up with a few (8)vbs.potok@mm virii in my _restore/archive directory - Specific files involved: FS270.CAB, FS274.CAB, FS284.CAB, FS292.CAB and FS306.CAB.
Since these are in my restore directory I would doubt if they would become active until I did a restore from those .cab files.. But.. the only way to delete those would be to boot up to floppy and delete them before windows takes hold - Only I wonder if that is wise or safe??
I'm also wondering if that virii would have anything to do with my Outlook problem??

Dave: I clean boot every morning - so unless I have a corrupt file that I can't spot..??

    Thanks.. <still scratching my head>

Have you run a scandisk/chkdsk on the drive recently?

    Otherwise, check out MJ's advice in <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=out&Number=59959&page=&view =&sb=&o=&vc=1>Post 59990</A>

Ran scandisk and defrag yesterday (after outlook would not open) and no errors were found.
Just ran the scanpst.exe program on my outlook.pst file and it reported no errors also..
I usually enjoy a good puzzle, but this....

Did you try a repair from the Add/Remove Programs for Outlook (Office) ?
Check your .pst file is not Read Only (Right_mouse properties from Explorer)
What happens if you move your .pst file (and .pab file?)so that Outlook can't find it?

Did you follow the specific Norton fixpotok tool for ME? Email worms/removers mess with the address book, and I have found residual damage causing open to hang.

Check for a corrupt odbc.ini in the windows folder. If everything is clean of the virus, uninstall/reinstall Outlook.

Re: Outlook 2000 won't open (WinMe - Office 2000 Premium)

I've followed the remove Potok instructions from Symantec, but wouldn't have need to - once I disabled the Restore option in WinMe the whole directory that contained the virus went to never-never land. But I did run the remove potok program and it reported nothing to remove.
Leif: The .pst file is not write protected, I even tried to re-install office 2000 from the control panel's add/remove program with no change in my result. Even moved my pst file to another directory and all I get is still the splash screen and then nothing - leads me to think it's not even trying to read the pst file but gets caught in a loop before..
Tonight I'll try to uninstall and then reinstall outlook 2000 - something has to work..??

Thanks for the info Mary, but SR-1 has been installed on my system since last April when I re-installed my Office 2000 Prem. Been working fine..
Guess it's time to reinstall Outlook and see what happens.

    Thanks all for the assist.

Re: Outlook 2000 won't open (WinMe - Office 2000 Premium)

MJ, your a peach... I was just about to say that I was addressing the sympton and not the cause as removing Outlook via the add/remove programs, rebooting, and then reinstating Outlook did nothing -
But renaming outcmd.dat seems to have done it, Outlook now works..What does outcmd.dat do?? I had a 172 KB file and now its been recreated as a 0 KB file.
    Finally, I'm <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>
    Many thanks to all here.

    (Sorry to butt in...)

outcmd.dat stores your toolbar and menu settings.
172KB sounds big to me (mine is 4K but I don't have much customisation)
I wonder if it was this:

Re: Outlook 2000 won't open (WinMe - Office 2000 Premium)

Feel free to butt in anytime Leif <grin>..
That might have been the problem, but the only customization I've ever done to Outlook was to change the calendar time spacing from 30 minutes to 15 minutes - and of course the menu buttons that ICQ added <sigh>..
I'll keep my eye on that file though to see what happens as the weeks go on.

    Thanks again.
