    Please excuse my ignorance!

The family laptop as only been used away from home when staying in a hotel where a user name and password for their ISP has been supplied by the hotel. Does one need additional equipment or software to use it from a wi-fi point in a coffee shop or public library, etc., or is this built into the machine?

Most newer laptops have wireless connections built in to enable connection to wifi hotspots. Just be careful what info you put out there on a public wifi connection because these are generally much less secure. If you could connect to the hotel hotspot with supplied info you should be able to connect to the local wifi hotspot.
