    Thumbs up

I have an old Compac that has been designated the grand-kids computer.. All of a sudden the shutdown sequence leaves the processor running.. occasionally, perhaps once every 3~4 times. The monitor has gone, and there is no HD activity, the only obvious things running are the fan(s?) and the power (green) light. I have no input that I am aware of and my only option seems to be a manual push / hold the on switch until the system shuts off.

    WindowsXP SP3

    Anyone with any thoughts?

    Thanks for your time

Usually when XP hangs on shutdown it is waiting to hear from a networking process. See if Advanced troubleshooting for shutdown problems in Windows XP, Troubleshooting Windows XP Shutdown Issues, or Troubleshooting Windows XP Shutdown Problems. If that does not work check out more of the links at troubleshoot xp shutdown - Bing.

    Thanks JoeP
From device manager I noticed a redundant Network Adapter which may have been the problem. I will keep an eye on it and see if the problem has been fixed.

    Thanks again for your time
