The full Error is "Cannot open a database created with a previous version of you application." I am trying to link to an old .mdb file with Access 2010 and am getting this error. Anyone have a clue as to why?

How old is the mdb? I have just tried linking tables with Access 2010 from an mdb file that uses the 2000 format, and that worked OK.

And to add to John's reply, I just linked to an Access 97 mdb file with Access 2007.

Another pertinent question - what is the format of your database where you are trying to establish the link? Is it an MDB file or is it an ACCDE file?

It is a .mdb file. The file was created with a front end program so I don't know what version of Access is its native(?) format. I know that up to version 2002 I could just open the file but after that I had to link to it.

I'm wondering if it is corrupted. I think (anybody can chime in here and correct me) that any mdb file that you could open with Access 2002 you can open with 2010.

If the file is not too large and does not have any sensitive data, you could zip it and attach so some of us could take a look.

Here is a sample file that ships with the program.

I encounter the same error when trying to open or link to your file.

Here is a Microsoft Article about this error.

This file is in Access 2.0 format, this is prior to Access 97.

I opened this file using Access 2003.

I can also link to it from another database.

With Access 2007, I was unable to open the Sample Access 2.0 .mdb file, but was able to link to the tables and edit it just fine. I would expect the same behavior with 2010, but don't yet have that version.

Were you able to open/link it with Access 2010? That is what I am having trouble with.

I tried using Access 2010 and could neither Open it, nor Link to it. I think you will have to try the solution suggested in the Microsoft Link I posted earlier.

Hi Anne, do you have to keep that database in the 2.0 format?

Yes I do have to kkep the file in the 2.0 format. That is the format the program creates. I use Access to clean up the data.

What program creates this Access 2.0 format?

Why not just convert that database into Access 2000 format, then link int it via Access 2010?
