In Word 2010, Ctrl+Shift+S opens the Apply Styles dialog box.

I heard anecdotally that in Word 2007, Esc closes it -- but that doesn't work in Word 2010.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for closing Apply Styles in Word 2010?

For what it's worth, Esc doesn't close this dialog in Word 2007 either, so it doesn't appear to be a Word 2010-specific behavior. I can't find any keyboard shortcut that closes it.

Stefan Blom, an MVP on social.answers.microsoft.com, had the answer: Esc actually shifts the focus to the document. To close the Apply Styles dialog box:

    1. Press Ctrl+Shift+S again to shift the focus back to the dialog box.
    2. Ctrl+Space, C.
