I am using Microsoft Word 2003 on a Windows XP SP3 PC. Occasionally when I open Word I am presented with a list of recovered files on the left of the screen. This is in spite of the fact that the PC has been left running overnight and there have been no power outages. What has caused these files to be recovered?

Just a guess, could it be that a resident poltergeist uses your PC after hours and does not close her files properly?

Look in the directory specified for auto save (Tools > Options > File Locations). Maybe you have some old files?

    cheers, Paul

I have seen this happen if you have Autosave set and your HDD goes to sleep. If the HDD does not wake up fast enough for Word, a recovery document may be created.
