font change to Times Roman (Powerpoint 97)

    Hallo,

a customer of mine has the following problem with Powerpoint 97:
When they copy objects, which contain text, from one slide to another, the object's font quite often (but not always) is changed to Times Roman. Whether they paste the object into another presentation or just into another slide of the same presentation, does not matter.

They use Arial as standard font - and swear they have set all their presentations' default font to Arial - yes, including the master. So far I haven't seen the presentation(s) in question myself.

I searched the MS Knowledge Base and came across two vaguely related articles:
    - Q249815, saying that copying text with a font smaller than 8 points from Excel to Powerpoint 97 produces a font change to Times Roman
    - Q190386, saying that certain printer drivers may print presentations in a Symbol or Dingbats font, and recommending a re-initialization of the respective printer driver.

Neither article is a really close suspect, so I would like to know if somebody around here has seen a similar phenomenon and / or could help me with a comment.

    Thanks a lot
    Doris

Re: font change to Times Roman (Powerpoint 97)

If not a solution, so I found at least an explanation: The bug seems to be in Format / Replace Font and seems to be restricted to Powerpoint 97. There, use Replace Font to change Times Roman into Arial, and end up with the funny phenomenon that copy and paste (within that presentation but also to other applications) turns the pasted objects' caption into Times Roman.

I own this findings to someone called David, who posted the following to microsoft.public.powerpoint on 1999/12/15:
" I've finally tracked down the problem with Arial turning to Times New Roman on our systems.

thanks for letting us know about your findings!

On a side note, one of the most reproducible causes of crashing I found with PPT 97 and earlier, was to use bullets from different font sets within the same text block. Practically a guaranteed thing. I know this, because for some peculiar reason one of the courses I teach does that very thing. I've been able to watch this a lot <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>.

Just leads me to believe that there is a lot more goin' on than meets the eye in the Font world.
