    I was reading this: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-anonymous-surfing-service.htm?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed& utm_campaign=Feed:+gizmosbest+(Gizmo's+Best-ever+Freeware)

    and installed this: http://hotspotshield.com/

    Benefits:
It gives me a secure connection in a wireless hotspot.
It allows to watch TV on Hulu from Canada. The servers are in the US. Hulu is only available in the US.
Anonymous web surfing (not a big deal to me)

I am looking for feedback as to whether this is secure enough to do banking on a laptop at a public wifi hotspot.

    Cheers
    Al

    Reviews seem mixed:

    Hotspot Shield - CNET
    Hotspot Shield | PCWorld

I actually cannot visit the company's official sites because they are blocked by our security software (saying the sites are purveyors of spyware, which probably means adware).

    Jefferson,

That alone would be enough for me to ditch the software much less trust them with securing my banking info!.

    Hi Al,

I personally would never consider doing any online banking from an unsecured public wifi location. Just my two cents. No charge for that.

When you run this program there are advertisments at the top of every page. I might try some of the other ones listed on Gizmo's page.

I don't actually do any banking at a wifi hotspot. It just seems like a good standard by which to measure security software.

My primary interest is access to Hulu. A secondary benefit would be more secure internet access at a Wifi hotspot.

    Thanks for the feedback.

As your bank site will be secured via SSL you can pretty much do it from anywhere. It's the email user name and password that often goes through unencrypted, and that's why tunnelling software is best (basically a VPN to a trusted site and then out from there).

    cheers, Paul

I ended up trying this one... http://proxpn.com/

Much slicker. You have to create an account which is fine for me since anonymizing is not why I am looking at this.

No advertising and it works on my iPhone

It's servers are in the US so I can watch Hulu and I have improved security while using public Wifi
