    CD-Writer and Win2k

I have an HP CD Writer Plus 7200i which, together with Adaptec software, worked fine under Win98. On upgrading to Win2k I updated the firmware to the latest version guaranteed to work with Win2k. I tried HP's version of DirectCD for Win2k but it didn't get off the ground...when I rebooted I found I had lost my CD-Writer and my CD-Rom! I uninstalled that completely and loaded Adaptec's latest version of Direct CD for Win2k (I also have their ECDC 4.0 on CD and updated that to the latest version). That seemed to work OK at first. I could use the CD-Writer with ordinary CDs and also write CD-Rs using ECDC 4.05. But when it comes to DirectCD it acts up. I can, with some trouble, format a CD-RW disk if it is brand new or if I have erased it before-hand. I can then write a file to it and, sometimes, read that file. But if I try to re-write the same file (which you do if scheduling a backup) I have THE problem. I also have THE problem if I try to re-format the disk without erasing it first. THE problem is that it writes OK if that is the first action of the software program but when it gets to the verifying stage of a format or the reading stage of a file it seems to go into an endless loop of reading. This endless loop of reading is accompanied by a quiet squawking noise and it takes over the computer freezing all out all other applications until I crash out of Win2k and reboot.
Software or hardware problem do you think? In the end it is probabaly cheaper to buy another CD-Writer than go to Roxio at $35 per incident!

    Re: CD-Writer and Win2k

I have the same CD-Writer in my secondary system, and I have yet to get it to run in the 'Writer' phase under Win98 FE or SE. It only works for me under Win95 OS-R2. I've tried all the downloads and patches... without success. I was wondering (just now after reading of your troubles) if it's the BIOS messing with the CD-RW. I upgraded to Win98 at the same time I added a 10 GB Western Digital drive.... I think I used the EZ-BIOS software to use the drive...

    Looks like I have a bit of investigating to do... <img src=/S/lightbulb.gif border=0 alt=lightbulb width=15 height=15>
