On a new desktop with Windows 7 64 bit, 3Gb RAM. Office 2003 32bit apps are very slow to open and close, sometimes taking 20+ seconds.
    Any thoughts?

One thought is that Word's settings (options, or Normal.dot, or an add-in) contain a reference to an obsolete network path. Word has a long time-out when searching for network paths. Perhaps the same is true of local paths, I'm not sure.

To see whether Word, for example, opens quickly when bypassing settings, try (the Win7 equivalent of):

    Start button > Run > winword.exe /a

    Any difference?

Good advice. This is a machine at a non-profit where I volunteer on Wednesdays. I will check it and get back to the forum.
    Thank you,

For diagnostic purposes, try starting Word in Safe Mode to see if opening and closing is up to speed.

From Start, Run (Winkey+R), type in

    winword /a

and press enter. Does Word open and close quickly now?
