Hope I got this correct.. In XP, the task bar had two small windows showing the upload/download of my Internet connection, also got an alarm when
I lost my satellite connection. Part 2, again in XP task bar, that whenever I used my backup dial-up Internet connection, would also the upload/download
connection and the data rate of the dial-up.
Does Windows 7 have this options, so far I have been unable to find them.

    Carl,

    Carl,
    Carl,
Hello.... I'm not familiar with the one that you have mentioned . I use a free program from " SoftPerfect" http://www.softperfect.com/ called "Networx" .It does not alarm but you can view your upload \ download speeds numerically and graphically and sits in the "tray" Regards Fred

    Carl,
Nope, Win7 doesn't have that. You'll have to find a utility like the one Fred suggested.

Never seen that icon on my Win7 machine. What does the popup window say if you put your cursor over it?

    What you really need is

    Network Activity Indicator v1.6

Network Activity Indicator displays the old 'two monitors' icon in
Windows 7 that flashed blue to show network activity on the
    System Tray.

    You can download it from

I have a Windows 7 Pro x64, and it's working like it should.

    Carl, hello.

I hope that I can type this in an understandable way. First : in Se7en, this connection icon is controlled via the Taskbar, find it and it will allow you to Hide-Show Notification etc.

To access it, go to the Control Panel and one-click on , you guessed it : NOTIFICATION ICON AREA.. Yeah !

In XP, it was connected to Internet Options, methinks. Wait, I will fire up one XP machine. Oh! Wrong Jean. It is indeed in Control Panel but in Network Connections -> right-click on the LAN -> Properties and at the bottom you ought to see a small square to tick ON that says : Show icon in Notification Area when connected. Voilà.

Happy as a pig in mire ! Jean.
