Wingdings Char. Codes (2000 SR1)

Hi,

When you select Insert -> Symbol and choose 'Wingdings' you can press any key to select a particular symbol.

Instead of randomly trying to find the one I need, how can I get a list of which keys correspond to which symbol?

Thanks,

m.q.

I usually just either type the list of characters (A-Z upper case and lower case, numbers, other characters) in a new document, press return, copy the line and change the second line to Wingdings (or whatever font I'm looking for. Basic, but works.

You can improve this by using tabs between characters or putting them in table cells so they line up properly ...

Hi Musab,

If it is for Windings then you can have a copy of my trusty "Secret Message Decoder Ring".

(Just to clarify, why I have such an item laying around, during the recent slew of email I received on the "Wingdings flight number hoax", I started replying with the real info and the attached file)

Also note that the Insert/Symbol dialog box is one you can leave open and continue to work back in the document.

Hi BAM (is this you, Bob?)

It's not very nice that the "Insert>Symbol"-dialog (in Word2000) doesn't give you the information directly. But if you have the status bar displayed, it will show you a message "Inserts Wingdings character XXX" if you click on any character. You can then use Alt-0XXX to type the character. This works with all decorative fonts.
I have posted a file to make a table for any decorative font <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wrd&Number=77886&page=4 &sb=5&o=0&vc=1#Post77886>here.

Hi Klaus,

Bob who??

Nah, I swiped Bob's 'secret decoder ring' and started sending it out (Actually, I asked permission of course).

Although it appears Bob may have gotten the idea from you??? (btw, if he included the Lounge in his support list I would start to wonder if he were more than one person. )

Very cool document and what a fantastic idea!

That's definitely one for the personal 'library' (If you don't mind of course )

As an additional note, have you considered submitting this to the MS MVP FAQ as an addition to your other fantastic articles?

Hi BAM,

I must confess I didn't submit any of the articles: They were written up by Dave Rado (another guy who seems too darn good to be real) ...
But I'll try to make amends by sending him something: thank you for the suggestion (and encouragement)!
