Can you recover 'permanently deleted' messages? (Outlook 2000)

Is it possible to recover messages that have been deleted from the Deleted Items folder, if the .pst file hasn't been compacted?
I assume that it's relevant that I'm not using Exchange, as I found a lot of references on the web to recovering deleted messages, but they all mentioned Exchange (and I don't have the 'Recover deleted...' option on my Tools menu).
The reason I would like to do this, if it's possible, is that I had 4 years worth of emails in my Deleted Items folder. I upgraded from OE to Outlook and Outlook's AutoArchive feature trashed the lot.

    TIA
    Alan

If they have been 'deleted' by AutoArchive, have they not been saved to an 'archive.pst' ?
Do a search, and see if you have that file....

Messages are not in archive file

    Thanks for the reply, Leif.
Unfortunately the messages are not in the archive file. I assumed that's where they'd go. That's where old messages in other folders such as the Sent Items folder ended up, but AutoArchive's default action for files in the Deleted Items folder is to 'permanently delete' them, not to move them to the archive file.
The size of my .PST file tells me that all the messages are still in it, I'm hoping there will be some way to 'undelete' them.

    Cheers,
    Alan

no, once the deleted folder is emptied, the index table is destroyed and they can't be recovered. (been there, done that <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>)

recover deleted is exchange server only and only if the admin turned it on.
