    I am trying to classify the increase or decrease of a variance between two periods. In some items the variance is positive and others it is negative. I want to use certain % criteria to establish the indentifier.

    one at a number <+ 9% to 0% or >- 9% to 0 ; the identifier will be X
    the second at a number +9.1% to + 20% or -9.1% to -20%; the identifier will be Y
    the third at a number >20% or < -20% ; the identifier will be Z

    Try something like this. (assumes the value is in Cell A1)

    =IF(ABS(A1)<0.09,"X",IF(AND(ABS(A1)>=0.09,ABS(A1)< 0.2),"Y","Z"))

    Regards,
