Cross references and book marks (97)

Using Word 97 at work, I wanted to insert a cross reference of the 'See pages 123 to 126' variety. I selected the text I wanted to refer to and bookmarked the selection. But if I try to do a cross-reference to that book mark it only puts in the page no. of the start of the selection. I had to resort to a bookmark at both ends of the passage and two cross-references.

Or is there in fact a way to get Word to do the whole thing with one cross reference?

Careful when you insert the Cross Ref. There's a dropdown when you select your bookmark that says things like, insert reference to:

    page number
    paragraph number
    text
    etc.

    Use text.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm in some difficulty here, because I use Word 2000 at home where I participate in the Lounge, and Word 97 at work. But I've just tried your suggestion and I couldn't get it to work. I selected a passage in a document and gave it a bookmark. Then I went to Insert->Cross-reference and chose Reference type 'Bookmark' . But in the 'Insert reference to' drop-down the choices are Bookmark text, page number, paragraph number (full context or no context) or above/below. Choosing 'bookmark text' inserts the whole text of the bookmarked passage, not something like '12 to 14' (or whatever the page numbers are). I think Word 97 is the same.

Or am I doing something wrong?

I'm not sure but I think what you are trying to do isn't available for a cross-reference. You can use a bookmark to create an index entry to a range of pages but I think your best bet is the two bookmark option you outlined. See page (bookmark1) to (bookmark2)

Ah well, that's not too onerous really. Just you end up with bookmark 1 and bookmark 2 for the cross reference, and a range bookmark for the same passage for the index entry. Thanks for your help.
