When I open the My Computer icon and click the mouse over one of my drives that are listed I get the following error, This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed create an association in the Default Programs control panel. Well I don't see how to do this and why wouldn't windows explorer open up and display the contents of the drive?

Sounds like you've been doing some tweaking that whent bad?? I've never actually come across this behavior from explorer before.
I would completely bypass going through "My Computer" in favor of pinning "Windows Explorer" to the taskbar and setting it's properties to target
    "%windir%\explorer.exe /e," (without the quotes).

    Liam, good morning.

"When I open the My Computer icon and click the mouse over one of my drives that are listed I get the following error"

Try the Computor in Start -> right column menu shows: Computor. It will show you the same page but let us hope that the path is better. ( Maybe not ! )
