I am using Windows Live Mail on a Windows 7 computer. I have used Windows Outlook Express and subsequently Windows Mail on previous computers for many years, so am very familiar with the program but this is the first time for this version.

When I try to sort my "sent items" by the "To" field, they actually sort by subject, not by the name it was sent to. I have multiple accounts, and this is true in the sent folders for all accounts. All other columns (including subject) sort as they should, as do ALL columns in the Inbox and Deleted Items (there isn't anything in the outbox or drafts folders to experiment with but those aren't folders I usually sort anyway). I don't remember noticing this issue prior to the most recent update, but this is a fairly new computer so it's possible that I simply didn't sort by that field until this week. I get the same result whether I am choosing the sort order by clicking the column title or by selecting from the menu ribbon.

Similarly, when I use the search function, if I try to find an item that was 'revised before (date)', it finds all items that were revised AFTER that date. The 'revised after (date)' field does what it is supposed to.

What is going on? A Google search brought up only instructions on how to sort, no other reports of this problem.

The columns that show when I open the sent items "folder" (they don't look like folders in this newest version of the program, but I'll call it that for lack of a better word) are:
    • Importance (denoted by !)
    • Attachment (denoted by a paperclip)
    • To
    • Subject
    • Sent
    • Account

I had one of my co-workers who does a lot of our computer minor trouble-shooting look at it yesterday and it behaved exactly the same for him.

Just to be clear, it is the "to" column that I am trying to sort. I often sort by the "to" or "from" columns and have never had trouble before this. Clicking the "to" column, or selecting it in the "View > Sort By" ribbon yields the exact same result as clicking "subject" or selecting "subject" in the "View > Sort By" ribbon.

I just added the "to" column to my inbox, and it has the same problem there. So it seems that the problem is with the "to" column no matter where it is used, not a problem with the sent items folder.

And the search feature (which as I mentioned is also not functioning properly) of course is not attached to a folder anyway.

On further investigation, I think all folders are sorted in date order either descending or ascending. You could make new folders to separate them from each account.

Hi Roderunner. Yes - the default sort order is by date. But clicking other column headers (subject, for example) will sort them by that field. The only field that doesn't work this way seems to be the "to" field.

I'm not sure what you mean about creating a separate folder. I can't find any option to create any folders in this version of the program [Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3502.0922)]. In previous versions of Windows Mail and Outlook Express I had my mail sorted into dozens of folders and subfolders (all of which could be sorted by any column I chose, at any time).

I've spent some more time hunting for an answer elsewhere online and still cannot find any evidence that anyone else has this problem - or the problem with the search feature (the really nice search feature has been the primary reason I have used this program for so many years. So I am now beginning to look at other programs and may have to just dump this one if I can't get these issues solved - but I'm still hoping to avoid that drastic action)

Thanks for that tip on folders Roderunner.

Do you know whether the issues with the "to" column sorting and the search function malfunctioning are issues that any other users of this program have encountered? I'm just baffled by such a blatant malfunction in basic features of program that has been evolving - and supposedly improving - for years.

None that I'm aware of. I just leave my inbox with most recent at the top, and I don't send many. All I do is remove the reading pane to clear out my inbox, press Ctrl + A to select all, hold down Ctrl and click the 5 or so at the top I want to keep then hit delete.
