I found a memory stick I had lost some time ago.
I used Ashampoo WinOptimizer 6 to undelete; it said the condition was fair.
On the stick were a number of files I thought I had lost, I then copied them to my hard drive, but when I tried to open them I got the following messages.

Doc files Word cannot start the converter MSWRD632.WPC pressed OK and Word opens the file and it is rubbish. I downloaded Fileformatconverter.exe off the Microsoft site and tried to run it, it said already installed.

JPG unknown or invalid marker type is found

PPT Powerpoint coundn't open this file Species_Presentation because no converter for this type of file is installed

GIF not a valid GIF file.

Excel File This file is not a recognizable format

I have Office 2000 now with XP fully up to date.

    Have you any ideas

    Thanks

What software versions were used to create the original files?

If those files were chopped up by writes and possible wear leveling then they are probably not fully intact files and appear corrupt to any software that you try to manipulate them with. Those files were unprotected while in a deleted state.

You might try something like Recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva on the memory stick and see if it can recover the files directly, or confirm that the files there are probably corrupt.

    Thanks Byron for your comment.

I have download Recuva which I run, and a lot of the file word files I can new open plus a few of the GIF files, so it must be the Undelete software, but none of JPG were even listed.

I have now run it again on different settings and recovered most of the JPG fils.

    Thanks again Byron
