I have a laptop computer (ASUS) with a German language Windows 7 Home Premium O/S. A Windows Update has been trying unsuccessfully to install itself to this system for the past month. It fails each time. When I click on "more information" it takes me to this page. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2160841

What is this update? Why will it not install? Is this update indeed for Windows 7? Its title lists only XP and Vista. How can I stop the installation of this file if it is not for Windows 7?
This ASUS is a UL 30A and not in a network.

Have you tried the downloading the update separately using the link in the KB article? Make sure you download the proper version for your system (most likely the one with x64 in the name). If you continue to have a problem you can contact Microsoft for free assistance with any security fix.

Joe, I have sent a similar request to Microsoft about this issue and should receive an answer "in one business day". I will wait for that answer but if it isn't forthcoming before the close of Friday then I will try your suggestion of downloading it from their site. I am just concerned that it might not be for Windows 7 as that O/S was not in the list of its description.

Thanks for the fast response. Always nice to know these boards are so active.

From what I can tell the update is for .NET & not Windows itself. That should make it applicable to any version of Windows on which the.NET version is installed.

Windows 7 is in the list of affected OSes at Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-077 - Critical: Vulnerability in .NET Framework Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2160841).
