Is there any way I can install Windows Live Photo Gallery on my Win7 PC, WITHOUT getting Windows Live Messenger?
I was trying to follow Woody's instructions in "Windows 7 ... for Dummies". But, right now it seems there are no checkboxes for several of the items, in Windows Live Essentials, when you start the installer. I keep canceling the installation because it keeps trying to include various items, including Messenger. Any advice?
(Note, I meant "How get" in the title of this thread.)

Yes you can. Download Windows Live 2011 and then when you start the install, you can choose only the apps that interest you. I have installed only Live Mesh and Live Movie Maker.

This is the initial screen, you need to choose the 2nd option, so that you can specify what programs you want:

    Then you can choose them:

Apparently I couldn't choose only the apps that interested me. That's why I posted. There were some checkboxes,
namely, for Mesh, Bing, Family Safety, and Win Messenger Companion,
but NOT for Messenger, Photo Gallery, Mail, and Writer. These four were going to be "updated". That sounds like maybe messenger is already there somewhere? If so, how can I uninstall it? Maybe that's the answer. I never installed it in the first place, though. So, I'm confused.

Yeah, if you have apps from previous installs, they will be updated (my 2nd image shows that too). You need to remove them before the new install. You can do it from Control Panel -> Programs and Features.

As Rui has shown, select "Choose the programs you want to install" at time of installation. That will give you the choices your looking for.

Apparently, that was the problem. I went to the general uninstall place, and said to "uninstall or change" Windows Live Essentials, and it gave me the choice of which components to uninstall, and I chose messenger there. Sorry I didn't notice this right away. I didn't know I had Live Essentials there already.
And, since I did, there was no checkbox for it when I tried to install the latest Win Live Essentials, only the promise to update it, which I didn't want.

You will have to uninstall the previous version because WLE will install an update to anything you already have and give you the option to install other apps you don't have. Once you uninstall the old version you should see the options to install just the apps you want without messenger.
