Missing attachment (OL2002)

Our mailserver (MDaemon) sends me (as postmaster) undeliverable mail, where there is no recognizable recipient.
Typically, it sends a message: "The attached message doesn't contain any addresses that can survive
the current parsing configuration."
However, there is no apparent attachment shown on the message header, although the size of the message indicates there is. If I forward the entire message to myself, it reappears with the 'attachment' now clearly showing.
I'm fairly certain I didn't have this problem using OL2K, and it is only a slight inconvenience as it is usually a symptom of spam.
Is this a known 'funny' with OL2002? - or do I need to check some setting with the server?

I may be mistaken, but doesn't OL2002 have the attachment patch/blocker that OL2K SP2 has by default? Which SP are you running on OL2K? Just a thought...

No SP yet - but then why wouldn't the attachment be blocked on the received forward?

Re: Missing attachment (OL2002)

Here's the deal (I think)...My boss had me load SP2 on my computer (we run OL2K), while he stayed back at SP1a. I received an e-mail with an attachment, but couldn't see it. The e-mail size indicated that the attachment was still attached to the e-mail, and the notice at the top of the (open) e-mail said that the attachment was blocked. If I forwarded that e-mail to my boss (on SP1a), he could get the attachment just fine. The patch doesn't remove the attachment, it just blocks it so that any computer running the patch can't access it. There is a KB article about this, but I'll have to look for it and get back to you.

I know that there is a admin kit (if you're running an Exchange server) that allows you to set which attachments should be blocked and which shouldn't. I don't know if it works for XP, though. I haven't tried it yet.

Re: Missing attachment (OL2002)

Right - I think I've got it:

Q289972 OL2002: Attachments Sent in the Message Body Are Not Displayed

which describes the symptoms exactly. So, it appears it is a 'problem' with the format the mailserver sends out the warning message.
Thanks for your help.

It's a known issue and MS is looking into it. AFAIK, it's not part of the monthly updates yet. I'm not even sure they have a handle on the cause yet.

PS - reply will render the attachment too.

Re: Missing attachment (OL2002)

i think this is a different issue and may apply only to contacts (which require RTF format to survive) Hitting forward or reply on these messages won't render the attachment.

The microsoft newsgroups are full of your complaint, where the attachment does get rendered. The first complaints said they were sent from Pine and apparently pine doesn't format mime attachments correctly. Outlook 2000 could figure it out and rendered it anyway. Outlook 2002 stumbles until forward/reply. (apparently these attachments are left on replies, which is not normal behavior) mdameon probably has the same mime error that pine does. (From the complaints in the newsgroups, millions still use pine. )

Re: Missing attachment (OL2002)

yes, ol2002 blocks attachments *based on file type* not just every attachment. *.msg is not one of the blocked attachment types, neither are jpg.

The yellow infobar at the top of the screen says "outlook has blocked a danagerous attachment" or something along those lines... in this case, there is no indication that it was blocked or even that an attachment is present, except by file size.
