I have a HP 3600 Laserjet and just got 'ORDER YELLOW CARTRIDGE' alert.

I am wondering just how much toner is left in the cartridge after getting that alert compared to it being full.

Like, 1/4 full, 1/8 full or what?

    Thanks

Those messages are part information, part advertising. Printer manufacturers want you to buy toner / ink so they err on the "you've still got plenty" side rather than "it'll run out real soon".

I would purchase the cartridge, then wait until it will no longer print that color before actually replacing it. You do not want to run out in the middle of an important print job and have to run to the store to get a new cartridge holding up the print job. I actually have replacements for all 5 cartridges on hand for this reason, but never replace then when the warning comes up. That would be very wasteful.

I was planning to buy refill kits for all of them soon.

I'm going to refill them myself.
They have all 4 colors for 159.00 incuding the chips.

HP software for some printers will tell you how many pages per color are still available.

Yes Joe, I have that software but don't use it.
