If I load any workbook and then select cell A1 on any worksheet. Hold the Down cursor key.. every approx 30 secs the cell selection hangs for maybe a second then carries on a few rows further down.

I have tried to correlate this with the CPU load and other running processes but to no avail.

Is there a way to investigate this behaviour?

    Thanks

    Ben

When I have seen this behaviour before I have assumed it was the processor "catching up" with the screen refresh.
Unless of course you have some kind of calculation or macros going on.
Have you tried looking at Task Manager?

Thanks Catherine, I have studied the task manager to try and correlate the hang ups. However the screen refresh rate is an interesting point. I used the down arrow example because I believed it was a simple way to show the hanging process. The problem gets far worse when trying to edit cell entries (but then the screen refresh rate is less of an issue). The laptop is running Win7 so I will use the resource manager, when I have the laptop long enough, to investigate the problem.

What happens if you press Page Down instead of the Down Arrow ?

That way you will traverse more rows per 'recalculation', which might yield some clues.

Does it still happen if you start Excel in Safe Mode? (hold down Ctrl while starting the program)
