Is it reasonable to replace one's current AV (mine is free avast5) with MSE? I also have adaware (lavasoft) and super malware(??).

Hi Phil, and welcome to the Lounge!

Are you having trouble with Avast 5? If, so give MSE 2 a try. The reason I ask is I run both on separate Windows 7 computers, and have found both to be excellent. Both have done the job for me for over a year, and both are light on resources. If you are not having difficulties with Avast 5, then the only reason to change to MSE would be to experiment, to observe if one runs better than the other on your computer. Some people have better experiences with a certain AV/AM package more than another, so it depends on the computer and on the users computing practices. So your mileage may vary.

    Phil,

It's very reasonable to do so. I did it when MSE first came out and got good reviews from sites I trust {like WS}. I was a longtime AVG & Comodo user and recommender. It's now been well over a year that MSE and Windows Firewall {along with an occasional manual scan with MalwareBytes} is the only security software I use on 2 laptops and 1 desktop and not a single problem...knocking very hard on wood!!!!!

Woops...I almost forgot that I use Web-of-Trust {WOT} for scanning links in internet searches {formerly used Finjan but no 64 Bit version available}.
May the Forces of good computing be with you!

    Hi Phil :

Unlike "RetiredGeek", I think it would be unreasonable to "replace"
Avast with Microsoft "Security Essentials"; I have used Avast
continuely since 2005 . I feel one of the major advantages of
Avast is their excellent Online Support Forums, where a
certified, Volunteer "Malware Removal Specialist" provides help
IF a serious malware problem arises, whereas I feel MSE's
    Support Forums are poor .

IF you ever "switch" antivirus programs, then part of the switching
"process" includes using the "old" antivirus's "Removal Tool",
which for Avast is called their "Uninstall Utility" .

I feel Ad-Adaware is no longer a top antispyware program and would
NOT have it on my computer; much better nowadays is Malwarebytes
    Anti-Malware and/or "SUPERAntiSpyware" .

I fully agree with RG on this. I have used MSE since it first appeared , have switched to Version 2 and have had absolutely no problems. I suppose support may ne needed for some, but I have NEVER had a problem requiring a support call. I believe this in itself is a positive response for MSe. Perhaps Avast support is so good because tthey get a lot of work, who knows. I am very pleased with MSE.
