With Windows 7 Pro I use the Folders and Details-View options.
When burrowing into documents I can open folders by selecting and single-clicking on their name/icon in the left hand pane of the window and the results (folder and file names) appear in the right hand pane - as was ever so.
(Double clicking in the left hand pane produces the same result as clicking the + symbol)
If I click on a folder name in the right hand pane I am told that there is no program associated with the file and am exhorted to associate some program.
The screen shot shows the situation.

I am sure (or as sure as my aging brain can now be sure of anything) that I used to be able to select and click folder names in the right hand pane and have the folder expanded just as if I had clicked in the left hand pane.

I do know that with winXP Pro I can open/expand folders by clicking names in the right hand pand - I just tried this.

I think I have looked at all options for tweaking Explorer.
    Can anyone help?
The problem is not catastrophic - just a nuisance.

Right click on the folder in question and select properties. What "type" of folder/file does it say?

See if the "folder" entry at Default File Type Associations - Restore - Windows 7 Forums helps.

It worked! I can now open Folders by clicking in the right hand pane the way the gods intended.
