Add Language to Status Bar (Word 2000 (9.0.4402 SR-1))

    Hi,

I am in Australia and we prefer Australian English down here so when we get documents in US English we want to know about it!

We have a number of installations with Word 2000 and on some of them the Status Bar includes a field that shows the language of the document, eg English (Australian) or English (US), however other installations do not have this field.

Is there any way to add this field to the status bar? In Jan 2001 Gary Frieder (WMVP) advised that you could not add items to the status bar in the same way that you can to other menu bars. Has this changed?

I appreciate any feedback you can provide.

    Thanks,
    Anthony.

    Hi Anthony,

As far as I know, the language should always be displayed in the status bar (as long as the status bar is displayed at all; see "Tools > Options > View").

If you install the "English (Australian)" keyboard (Windows Control panel > Keyboard), you can switch between different keyboards/languages with a keyboard shortcut (default: left Alt-Shift) or with a button in the Windows task bar that also displays the current keyboard.
In Word, the language is automatically set according to the used keyboard.

You might also look what language support is installed in Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Language Settings.

Thanks for your help Klaus. After adding English (Australian) to the keyboard and changing the normal.dot file the field appeared.

    Hi Anthony,

I hadn't yet gotten onto Word 2000 back in January so was unaware then of the language setting in the status bar.

As far as I know though, you can't customize the status bar to add any other user-defined fields to coexist with the built-in ones.

    Gary,

Perhaps the field can't co-exist with the other items but it might be sufficient (altho the problem appears to be solved) to just show the language by itself on the Status Bar. I have a macro that you posted in Jan for showing the word count on the Status Bar.
