    Question Change Icon for "Program Files"

    In 2003 on the old WOPR forum Hans advised me that if I added the text below in a file Desktop.ini in the Program Files folder I could change the windows explorer icon for "Program Files"

    .ShellClassInfo]
    IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll
    IconIndex=27

    For several years this worked without a hitch and gave me a unique, easy to find icon. Now for some unknown reason it is not working, even the the file is still in place.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    1) search for "iconcache.db"
    2) delete all occurrences
    3) restart Windows

    or

    1) use TweakUI to
    2) "Repair Icons"

    btw, the first line must read
    [.ShellClassInfo]

    Ack; Thanks for your reply.
    Unfortunately they did not solve my problem.
    BTW the missing [ was only in the message.

    In summary, I found 2 instances of iconcache.db in Documents and Settings (D&C) and renamed both in case I needed to restore them.
    That did not show any change to the PF icon on reboot.
    I then tried Tweekui, it moved all my desktop icons but did help the PF icon. I noted a new .db file that was 3 times the original.
    I also saw that both D&C locations had a desktop.ini as shown below.

    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@shell32.dll,-21765

    I replaced both with a copy of my original, but again on reboot no change to PF icon.

    Do you have any further thoughts?
    Again thanks for your efforts!

    By checking "Change icon with each folder"

    You will be able to change ANY ICON on your system and you will now have an additional entry in the right click option of "Change Icon(I)

    Pic for the first batch of icons you can change - Program Files is on Icon-2

    Barbara Ann; Thanks for your response!
    I D/L & ran the program, as promised it did show the "Change Icon" option on the context menu.
    Unfortunately it would not change the icon for Program Files.

    Still a mystery.

    I changed the generic to one with an icon using the right click on Program Files and Change Icon(1). This is what is in the desktop.ini file now....

    [.ShellClassInfo]
    IconIndex=19
    IconFile=C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll

    Right click on Program files and then Change Icon (1)
    Click in the box here
    http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/355/rightclick.jpg

    You will get a blank window next
    http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/6296/blankt.jpg

    Click here
    http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/5029/clickfx.jpg

    This will bring up system32 which is the default directory for shell icons (shell32.dll)
    http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/5161/system32j.jpg

    Browse to any of the windows files located in system32 or to one of your own folders
    This is one of my many thousand icon sites
    http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/7...fmyfolders.jpg

    Choose what icon you wish
    http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/4...contotaste.jpg
    Click on the icon and then click OK.

    This takes you back to the folico box where you will now click "Apply" then "Close"
    http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/1350/folico.jpg

    You will now have a different icon for Program Files and there will be a desktop.ini file also under Program Files

    --------------------------------------

    Here is a pic of one of the folders on one partition. Each folder has a different icon (done with the right click method)
