    More details please.

What anti-virus software are you using? DId it attempt to clean the virus?

What do you mean by "tried to run programs"? What programs?

There's little point in throwing random anti malware programs at this until you've been able to get a thorough diagnosis.

I would read and follow the instructions here, noting any errors along the way, if you still have problems after successfully running all the procedures there, create a new thread in the Malware section there and post the required logs, they'll help get your PC sorted out.

    Still More info needed

For starters, when you were notified that you have a exe virus, what other information did it tell you? It should have given you a name or some other information saying what it was. What program told you you have a virus???? If AVG didn't remove the virus what is AVG telling you? I'm assuming AVG is what notified you of a virus so I don't understand why it didn't remove it.

If AVG didn't notifying you did you recieve a pop up page that said this? If so this is simply scareware/adware/malware bla bla bla.

Possible solutions you can use are using a online virus scan from a different company and installing some spyware/malware programs.

    For online virus scanners:

Microsoft's Windows Live Safety Scanner, http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm,
    ESET's Online Scanner,http://www.eset.com/online-scanner,
    McAfee's FreeScan, http://home.mcafee.com/Downloads/FreeScan.aspx?ctst=1
    Symantec's Security Check, http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/h...ZDNNXGEQGGYYFK

    Malware:
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/
    http://www.superantispyware.com/
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm (very good for malware also)
    http://www.iobit.com/security360.html

It might be best to do this in safe mode with network.

As a side note, I personally think AVG has slipped a great deal from years gone by. Complaints are its now bloated and a resource hog. If you are using the FREE version of AVG perhaps you should think of switching. Security Essentials is excellent and also free: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
