Set Word bookmarks to always sort by location?

Does anyone know if there's a way to set Word's bookmark feature so that the default sort is by location? The factory default sort is by name. You can choose to sort by location, but it goes back to sorting by name, even in the same Word session. I'm guessing it's not possible, other than by writing a VBA macro. -Stuart

    Hi Stuart,

Which Word version? For me, Word 2000 & 2007 both respect the 'location' setting in Insert|Bookmark during the current session. Insert|Cross Reference > Bookmark always sorts alphabetically, however.

    Paul-

Thanks for the reply - I'm in Word 2010. I discovered what the problem was. I have a pair of Word macros I use a lot - one sets a temporary bookmark and the other goes to it. The VBA code for those macros included the default "Name" sort order. I changed that to "Location," and the problem is solved -at least the problem of the sort going back to Name during a Word session.

    Stuart,

FYI if you remove the .DefaultSorting = wdSortByName your macros will respect the current setting rather than force it to something else.
