Phantom slow outlook 2007 mail downloads

My mail on two different machines is taking a long time to download (not using Exchange), then a lot of mails come up together and then I get a message "downloading x mail of y" but these never seem to show up and I do not know where they are going!

Often when there is what appears to be slow downloading Outlook is downloading a large attachment.

Have you checked your spam folder for the missing messages?

Check you spam filter settings to see if it is set to delete email rather than move to your spam folder.

I have discovered that certain messages on my ISP site appear to be blocking things and when I delete them directly the issue appears to go away.
