    Outline Numbering headache (97)

<img src=/S/brainwash.gif border=0 alt=brainwash width=15 height=15>O.k. so here is my problem. I am in the process of creating a template that will be loaded on everyones computer. This template will more or less co-exist with the normal.dot. This template will house our company's report styles. There are two formats we use: one with bullets and formatted headings (no numbers) and one with outline numbers (I, A., 1), (a), etc.) These would not be used within the same documents, these just need to reside on the computer to be used whenever. It is not an option to put them on individual templates and put them in a workgroups directory. To make a long story short what I have done so far is to put dropdown menus with the styles in them, one for outlines, one for bullets, and one for formatted headings. I then have created a AutoExec macro to point to the style gallery (thanks to Charles's advice). I then place the template in the Microsoft Office/Office/Startup directory so it will load when word is opened and be available at all times. Everything looks great, the bullets work, the formatted headings work, however, my outline numbering is all screwed up. The paragraphs are formatted correctly with proper indenting, but the numbers are not present.

I have recreated the numbering by the use of styles and named them other than Heading 1, etc. They are called Outline_heading_1, etc. but I still have the same problem.

I have been asked to add yet another set of styles to the template as well. My department (Word Processing) is familiar with attaching templates from a set directory. The majority of the people are not. If it was to be set up in separate templates the average user would not use them. They would just manually number stuff. Any suggestions as to what is causing my problem! I have searched and searched for solutions.

    Thank you so much!!!!! <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

    Christy,

If you've got styles in a global template in the startup directory, these styles are not going to (automatically) become available to documents that are created based on other templates - documents inherit their styles collections at birth, from the template upon which they are based.

So unless you are doing an extra step to make these styles available from the global template to the documents, they're not going to work (or alternatively, you may have styles with the same name but with different definitions).
Can you explain what is the function of the AutoExec macro pointing to the style gallery (I must have missed that thread)?

I won't repeat what Gary has already told you.

Keep in mind that bullets and numbering are controlled by list templates (which are not templates at all but rather stored in the registry). You may want to take a look at which isn't quite what the title suggests, yet. Also look at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/WordsNumberingExplained.htm> Word's Numbering Explained (which is what it sounds like).

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Charles:

    (Being nitpicky here <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>)

List templates aren't stored in the registry, they're stored in the document. That's why you can use a line of code like:

    ActiveDocument.ListTemplates.Count

What does get stored in the registry is the user's view of the List Galleries i.e. what you see when you open the Format > Bullets and Numbering dialog.

Thanks for the correction. Sometimes the only way to learn something new is to expose my ignorance publicly.

    Re: Outline Numbering headache (97)

Gary (and Charles), Thanks for the info. Gary. Refer to post 76504. In there it refers to using the organizer "Put some macros that utilize the Organizer to pull your styles either from this global or from a series of style sheet templates. Put the macros on a custom toolbar in your global." What I did (which I thought would work) was create a macro that pointed to the style gallery. As soon as I have some more time to work on this, I am going to try something different. Like I said in my post, the levels in the outline are there, the numbers are missing, so the text is spaced and indented correctly, it is just missing the numbers.

    Re: Outline Numbering headache (97)

    Gary and Charles,

I think I got my problem licked. You know when you are setting up your outline number and you click the more tab to bring up the more information? Well there was nothing under Link to level. When I linked the levels it worked.

What I have is a template that houses custom AutoText entries, paragraphing heading styles (14pt, bold, underline, centered, etc.), bullets, and Outline numbering. I have a toolbar which has dropdowns for each different category, I have a button that sets the margins to our company's margins. I have a AutoExec macro that goes to the Style Gallery, selecting the template in the style gallery. Then I place a copy of the template in the Microsoft Office/Startup directory. When word launches the toolbar and styles are now available. At this point it looks like everything works. I am keeping my fingers crossed because I have more to add to it.

The powers that be do not want multiple templates for people to access, they want one that is always there. (What they had done previously, is made some changes to the normal.dot.

Anyway, I thought I would attach a copy of the template for your viewing. Please keep in mind, I am still fiddling with it.
