    unable to deactivate USB device

I am unable to deactivate and remove safely the memory card for my Canon digital camera. I get this message, my OS is in Italian, so I had to translate it from the message. I am running Windows XP, and this has been happening for a couple of weeks. "Problem while removal of USB mass storage device" An application is still accessing the device "USB card reader USB device" failed to disable the device.
Please do not give me something difficult to do that I cannot understand, thanks, BASE113

If you have any Windows Explorer instances open close them first.

Hi BASE113, welcome to the new lounge.
I suggest you plug in your USB device, wait till it loads, but don't open it, then go to device manager and uninstall it. Reboot your pc. with it connected.

Do you have any software that automatically manages your photos? Such software usually pops up when you plug in your camera and offers to upload the pictures to the PC. If you have such software, it might have the memory card on the camera open.

Another possibility is that you have Explorer open and looking at the pictures on the camera.

If neither of those are the case, then you could try Process Monitor from sysinternals - it should be able to tell you which application has the camera open.

When you find out which application has the camera open, close the application and then try to eject the camera again.

If none of the above works, shut down the PC and then unplug the camera.

Sysinternals is a suite of apps you can download and install. Find Device Manager in the Control Panel.

I am sorry to be so sanguinosamente stupid, I have no idea what you want me to do. I came here asking for help, I can see that it might be better to see if I can find someone here in Italy to help, thanks for everything.

On most system that have XP installed if click on the Start button "My Computer" (sometimes it will be a "User-name computer") will be in the right half of the Start menu. Right click on "My Computer", then click on "Manage". When the Computer Management application starts you should see "Device Manager" if the left pane. Click on it to display your devices in the right pane.
