Change field contents to text? (Word 97)

I have a file that's like a journal article, with numbered references at the end of the file that are cited by number in the text. I'm used to these being Word endnotes or maybe footnotes. But these seem to be fields---each place where the citation number(s) appear is a field, and the entire reference list at the end is another field. The numbers and their references don't seem to be linked; that is, when I deleted a reference, it didn't change the numbering or delete the citation in the text.

What I'd like to do is remove the field codes and make it all just text. I can't just save it as ASCII text, because I need all the other formatting information in the file. I know absolutely nothing about fields, so I hope there's some really obvious, easy way to make the fields go away and just leave their content behind.

Of course, I'll feel like a moron then . . .

Hi Lin,

It's not super obvious. What you want to do is "unlink" the fields. Select the fields and press Ctrl+Shift+F9. You can Select All, but that will unlink *every* field, including TOCs, indexes, etc.

HTH,

Hi Lin:

And to select the fields sequentially, so you can use the technique that Chris recommends quickly, press F11 to jump from field to field. This is especially useful if your fields are separated.

Hope this helps.

Thank you both! That's exactly what I needed.
As it happens, the document didn't have any other links, so I could select all.

You can also use Ctrl-6 for this (a hanger-on from the earliest versions of Word). See Keyboard Shortcuts - Fields and Dates for a table listing some other shortcuts for use with fields.
