    IE Incompatability Messges

I use IE 8.0 on occasion and certain sites gives me messages that support for my browser IE 6 is ending soon or is imcompatible.

I clearly have IE 8 according to the about tab in my browser.

    Any ideas?

The site might have a poorly designed browser detection script, or your browser might be sending an old user agent string. I have a test page where you can see the user agent string received by web servers: http://dev.jeffersonscher.com/jstest.html. You should see something like: navigator.userAgent = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows...

    This was the result.

    Browser "User Agent" string: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; Trident/4.0; Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) ; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; Tablet PC 2.0; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; .NET4.0C; Creative AutoUpdate v1.40.01; AskTB5.8)

That's extremely confused... it's IE7, no wait, it's IE6. One reason this could happen is running a compatibility program from Microsoft called the User Agent String Utility (info: MSKB 923196, Download details: User Agent String Utility version 2).

One would think installing IE8 would override that and use its own UA strings (listed in: The Internet Explorer 8 User-Agent String (Updated Edition) - IEBlog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs), but maybe not.

There must be a way to reset that to the default, but it might require a visit to the registry, or a more drastic reset. Here's what I found in a 3 minute search, but before going too far, you probably want to do a little more searching: How to reset Internet Explorer settings.
