    Spybot S&D can't purge FunWebProducts

Tonight I ran Spybot S&D on a Win7 machine and found just one little problem: "Fun Web Products," which I suppose is adware. What I've found online tells me Fun Web Products is not big deal. Even so, I'd like to clean it out.

I instructed Spybot to kill the pest, but I get error messages that read: "Unexpected error in fixing problems. (Cannot create file c:\windows\wininit.ini)." Another message box suggests that maybe we can fix the problem after a re-boot, and advises that I run Spybot as an administrator.

Well, I've rebooted and I've run Spybot as an administrator, with the same results. I Googled for a solution, and the best free advice I could find started with a recommendation that I begin by deleting "My Web Search" by way of Control Panel >> Add and Remove Programs. I can find nothing listed by that or any similar name.

So...should I just ignore a relatively harmless pest alone and disregard the warning from Spybot? Or is there something else I can (or should) do?

You could try SuperAntiSpyware. However, Fun Web products are supposed to be uninstallable through official means. They could be under another name because the software often is bundled with freeware.

Effectiveness in doing this job has moved on from Spybot and Ad-Aware over the last ten years to SuperAntiSpyware, as Jefferson suggests, and especially Malwarebytes' AntiMalware and HitMan Pro. I have found the combination extremely effective in dealing with nasties on friends' laptops (and it always seems to be laptops, used by teenage sons...)

    Lightbulb Spybot Support Forums

I would think the BEST place for a Spybot-related problem would be on their Support Forums at http://forums.spybot.info They have several expert, certified, Volunteer "Malware Removal Specialists" to help, but recommend you do a "Search" on those forums for "Fun Web" to see IF that problem has already been covered !? IF not, register there, then post a Request for help .

Thanks for the link to the Spybot forums. The Help file didn't mention the forum (not that I noticed, anyway). I'll try the forum and see what they say.

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like funweb puts a trojan to prevent its removal. In that case, RKILL will remove the trojan and then malwarebytes or SAS will get it. RKILL is completely safe, the bleeping computer site I link you to is safe and it gives you a log when it finishes. I just used it on my wifes computer to remove the AVG scam bug.

    Then your tools will work
    Hope this helps

also, look for accoona search assistant in your control panel. that is one of the names it goes by and you can uninstall it there.

Usually a trojan is malicious, so that probably is not the best term for whatever they've installed.

    Lightbulb MyWebSearch/FunWebProducts

Hi Caesar : It appears that "FunWebProducts" is a "subsidiary" of the "MyWebSearch" Adware !? I visited the Spybot forums and see you posted a Request for help in their "Spybot" forum ; the info from "Gopher John" seems simplistic based on the Error Message(s) you reported there . Based on how "Al" was helped in the thread "Problem removing MyWebSearch Left- overs" at http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=60941 ( which I recommend you read through ), it appears you would be better helped by requesting help in their "Malware Removal" forum, where most likely you would be helped by a "Malware Removal Specialist" . No telling WHAT else MAY be on your computer !?

A friend of mine got hit with "FunWebProducts" too. I had set them up in 2010 with weekly Acronis True Image backups. We also kept monthly archives on an external backup drive.

We simply restored last month's Acronis image, which predated the problem. Sometimes it is easier / better to restore from backup, rather than trying to clean out an existing problem.

I've been using Spybot Search & Destroy for years and I rely on it heavily to keep my own PC (and the PC's of my many customers) Spyware free. I also install it for all my customers and I give them a full page of instructions, on how to get updates, Immunize and run scans.
After I'd set it up a few times, I realized that much of its functionality in tied to doing the proper Setup. So I set about writing down the entire setup procedure. It took a full page of text to just outline the Setup.

Way too many people install a program like that, and never update it, never run the "Immunize" function and never run a scan. I guess they think that just having the program on their HD protects them. Nothing could be further from the truth.
First, the program needs to be properly set up, or it will never run right. Next, it needs to be updated, every Wednesday, and then the Immunize function needs to be run. Finally, after every update, it's advisable to run a full scan, to find and remove anything that's crept into the PC since the last update/scan. Unfortunately, the program does nothing by itself.... it requires the able hand of the operator to make it go.

I just found the Portable version of Spybot S&D on the net a few days ago and I downloaded it and installed it and updated it on my Flash Drive that I use when working on customer's PC's. The version of Spybot S&D that everyone should be installing and using on their own PC, is V 1.6.2.46.
I've had no problem with Spybot S&D removing "My Web Search" spyware and all its associates.
But NO ONE program is going to get every piece of malware on any PC. It takes a package of good Anti-Malware software to totally clean a "Dirty" PC.

    * Quite often, it can be advisable to run Anti-Malware software in SAFE MODE.

This week, there are only two new updates, but 50 new Immunizations.
Spybot S&D can immunize both I.E. and Firefox.

I would be interested in learning How to set up Spybot S&D correctly. I've got v 1.6.2.46; I update & scan weekly; still have MY WEB SEARCH showing up in the results & not being "fixed". If my Spybot were set up correctly, then it would have a better likelihood of removing it.

    Thanks!

Update: Ran Spybot S&D in safe mode & it removed MyWebSearch & all its nasty friends. Rebooted & re-ran Spybot & it no longer shows up in results.

Still would like to know how to set up Spybot correctly

    Thanks for the tip!
