Windows 7 Optimum Memory on a Laptop

I'm updating a HP laptop and planning on using Windows 7 32 bit. It presently has 1GB of DDR2 memory with one slot available. My question is should I buy another 1 GB stick so it can run in Dual Channel mode or would it be better to add a 2 GB stick to bring the memory up to 3 GB? I guess the other option is to buy 2x 2GB and use Windows 7 64 bit.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hi bap37,

Have you used the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to see if your laptop is capable of running Windows 7? If so, I would install the max memory your motherboard will support. 32 bit Windows will be able to address between 3.25 and 3.5 GB RAM.

Check out Crucial.com here. Use the Crucial Memory Advisor Tool to determine the max RAM that can be installed in your HP laptop. It is easy to use and is accurate; you simply enter manufacturer, product line, and model of your laptop.

My Toshiba Tecra can only address about 2.75 GB of memory...

Mileage does vary depending on how a machine is equipped, such as whether the video is on motherboard or a discrete video card, etc.etc. My MSI laptop (Win7 32 bit) is able to address about 3.5 GB RAM. I've not owned a laptop that had 2.75 GB of of addressable memory, like BATcher's does, but I've run into it now and then.

If you can get a decent deal with the memory, go with the 4GB (2x2) and install Windows 7 32 bit.
Don't worry about what your os can address or not.
