    Word 2010 open files problem

I am attempting to use the open files icon in word 2010 and the files do not show in the dialog box. There are a couple of folders, but nothing else. If I go look at the documents folder in my computer, the files show just as they should. This appears to be a Word only problem, as all other office programs seem to show the open dialog box just fine.

The files are located on a file server and not directly on the computer itself. Anyone have any suggestions to resolve this problem.

In earlier versions of Word, you could change the view of a folder using a "File Types" drop-down. By any chance is yours set to something overly restrictive or specialized? I don't know whether any other special filters have been added to the dialog. Looking at Word 2007, nothing leaps to mind.

Problem solved. The file choice was set to "Word Templates" and not to "All Word Document" Thanks jscher2000 for the hint that sent me in the right direction.
