Question SATA or IDE HDD: How can I tell?

I have several old hard drives (remnants of dead-and-gone computers) and am looking at a hard drive dock that will (I hope) let me use them for backup. But I don't know whether they're SATA or IDE. How can I tell which they are?

I'm somewhere in kindergarten when it comes to hardware. Can someone help me with this please?

    Editor, hello.

Clint is right, the ribbon is a give-away. The old flat ribbon with the 40 wires is PATA and needs the large 4-wire connector too, yellow, 2 blacks, red.

SATA has a flat ribbon for power ( strange ) and a smaller one for data, remember, it is SATA, serial. The end of the connectors are also L shape for a key,the two keys are side-by-each. ;-)

    Have fun. Jean.

Pictures! Just what I needed! (I may have overstated my skill level when I said kindergarten. More like, maybe, preschool. Hey, I've got twelve grandkids — I think in those terms.)

    I do appreciate your help!

My last response didn't go far enough — I meant my thanks for everyone who responded. Lounge member have saved me countless hours of frustration. I hope someday I can return the favor!
