    Column Width Tooltip

    Hi,

First time poster - be kind!

The tooltip which normally appears in Excel 2007 when dragging column/row borders to show the size has disappeared. Other tooltips work normally. Not a unique problem apparently but haven't seen a solution yet. Win XP, Office 2007 SP2.

Does it happen if you run Excel in Safe mode ?

If not, then you probably have a problem with an add-in.

Thanks Martin. In fact, I had just discovered for myself that the problem disappears when running in Safe Mode. I guess it's now a process of elimination. The only thing is, I know how to disable all addins via the Trust Centre, but not how to disable them individually.

    1. Click the Microsoft Office Button , click Excel Options, and then click Add-Ins.
    2. In the Add-ins box, identify the add-in that you want to enable or disable and note the Add-in type located in the Type column.
    3. Select the Add-in type in the Manage box and then click Go.
    4. Select or clear the check box for the Add-in that you want enable or disable and then click OK.

Thanks again Martin. Here it gets interesting as none of the add-ins are enabled. My understanding was that safe mode just disables addins so if none are enabled how come safe mode resolves the problem?

This problem has now been resolved by Microsoft Support. The issue was due to Excel registry settings left over from previous Office installations. I assume this is why the problem didn't occur in Safe Mode - apart from disabling Add-Ins it was also disabling these registry settings. The solution involved deleting Excel, removing all registry references to Excel and then re-installing Excel. Thanks to Martin for getting me on the right track.

Thanks for posting the solution - must be one of the most abstruse ever !

I wonder if other seemingly illogical Excel issues stem form the same source.
