Auto multiple tab problem.

Internet Explorer was recently opened and the 'Favorites' button clicked.
IE immediately started opening multiple tabs in rapid fire succession.
Within seconds IE had thirty or so tabs trying to open with more coming at great speed.

With IE not responding to attempts to stop, cancel or to close,
the cursor was put over the 'Start' button with intent to shut down the system, but even before it was clicked Win7 went into shut down.

After several reboots and several more of these crazy session things seem to have settled for the time being.

What should I look for?
Is this a known problem?
Is there a fix?

What version of Windows?

What version of IE?

It is "normal" behavior for IE to open all the sites in a folder when you click on the folder. Usually you asked if you really want to open that many tabs at once. I suspect that opening all your Favorites overwhelmed the system.

Thanks for your response Joe,

The system is Windows 7 (mentioned in the post) and IE8.
Maybe you misread my post......or the title of my post was misleading.

I don't know that it's normal for IE to open twenty duplicate pages of Google in 5 seconds and then open another twenty duplicate pages of a Microsoft site in the next five seconds, and then more and more untill IE crashes.
All this just by clicking the Favourites button to access the drop down menu of your Favourites list.

This is not about the normal behaviour of intentionally opening multiple tabs that were chosen, this is about IE being beyond control and trying to open multiple pages and tabs all on it's own untill it choked the system and the system crashed.

Sorry, I missed the Win7 in your original post.

Have you tried resetting IE to defaults (Tools | Internet Options | Advanced | Reset)?
