    VB Runtime Error '424' (Office 97 SR2)

EVERY time, and only when, I open a .doc file from outside Word, I receive the following error:

Microsoft Visual Basic Run-time error '424' Object Required.

My options are "End" and "Help". Not being a coder, help does not do me any good except it did cause me to look at file locations under "option" - they appear to be good. Selecting "End" closes the error window, starts Word and opens the file just fine.

Opening the same or any other .doc file from within Word does not produce the error. Any ideas?

    System Specs:
    WinNT4SP6
    P2-266MHz, 128Mb
    Office/Word 97 Pro, SR2
    Outlook 2000
    IE6

    Hi Bill:

Go to My Computer/Options/File Types & scroll to Microsoft Word Document.
    Click Edit.
    Select Open
    Click Edit
For application used to perform action, does it say:
    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficewinword.exe" /n

    or whatever your path is?
    DDE Message should be:
    [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]

Application is Winword & Topic is system.

    Hope this helps.

Well Phil, when I read your post at home I thought you nailed it. However, I checked the File Type settings as soon as I got to work this morning and they are exactly as you noted. I'm scratching my head on this. I even reinstalled (I did not remove first) Office hoping that would fix it - no go. Norton Utilities did not indicate anything wrong with the registry (at lease no errors, that when corrected, fixed my problem).

For what it's worth, I tried clicking on a .ppt and an .xls file - Powerpoint and Excel fired up and opened the files with no problem.

Any other ideas? I am quite comfortable at the command line and with regedit.

    Thanks

    Hi Bill:

Right now this is a guess, but I'll research it further. I'm not familiar with NT. If this were Win98, I'd try booting to DOS & running

    scanreg /fix /opt

& letting Windows rebuild the registry. I don't know if this is available in NT.

Do you have global templates that might be trying to run a macro upon document open? If they presume the existence of Document1 (some commands are not available where there is no document open), this might be the problem. (Having no Debug option is standard for problems in global templates.) Try holding the shift key while Word open to stop auto macros from running and see if that helps. (It's late, rambling...)

    ALRIGHT!!!! but with a caveat.

I had several global templates loading so I went to my C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeSTARTUP directory to try removing them one at a time and then it hit me. A couple months ago, I upgraded to Woody

That's odd - I did not have that problem on my Win98SE system - unfortunately I cannot verify it for you since that system is now running Me with Office 2000. Do you have access V1.0? If not send me private email and I can email it to you.
