    shutdown issue, hangs

This has probably been covered for one OS or another, but a search did not reveal what I was looking for.
My system is Vista and just recently it will hang on shutdown and will not finish. I think there may be a program that is not closing and causing this, but how can I find which one or what else could be causing the problem?

    Is your BIOS up-to-date?

    Is your video driver up-to-date?

Also check the event viewer for any potential details that may point to a process, application, or driver.

Use the Clean Boot diagnostic procedure to narrow down the culprit.
