Red "X" instead of picture on web page

A .png file, for example, appears as a Red "X" on web pages I visit.
It happened under IE9, so I uninstalled IE9 and went back to IE8.
I still got the red "x", so I reinstalled IE9.

Can anyone help me fix this issue?

    Thanks,
    Dick

    PS,
    I'm running Windows 7

Is it only for .png files?

If it is only on specific web sites can you give a link or two?

    Internet Options

    Go to Internet Options:

    InternetOptions1.jpg

In the Advanced Tab, scroll down to Multimedia section and check that the Show Pictures, NOT Show Placeholders is selected.

    InternetOptionsMultimedia.jpg

This may be all you need.

Thanks Ted. Mine was already checked to "show pictures."
JoeP517, it was for more than .png files, but that was the one I was having a problem with
    before I posted here.
I found a M'Soft troubleshooter (Mats_Runieperformance.exe) that has resolved the issue.
Thanks to you both for trying to help.

    Dick,

Thanks for posting back with your solution. I assume this was from Microsoft Fix-It.

    Ted:
Yes; although I came upon it as a result of a Google search.
    Best,
