    Desktop shortcut failure

After installing a seagate external hard drive on 4/18/11 i can no longer start an application normally. When i click on the icon the menu comes up but when i click on the 'open' command nothing happens but i can click on 'file location' and when that comes up, then click on the application to start it. Or i can go to the start menu and click on the application there and start it. But all that is not the way it's supposed to work.
I've tried a restore to a checkpoint but those have failed.

    Any suggestions or help.

Mickey_684, Welcome to the Lounge. it always nice to hear from new members.

It sounds like the shortcut to open the app may be corrupted. Delete the normal shortcut, then go to the file location, right click on the file that opens the app normally and choose Create a shortcut. You can place this shortcut anywhere you wish, the desktop, the Start menu, anywhere by simply dragging it to the location.

Can you remove the external drive and perform a system restore to a time before the drive was installed?

I had just finished doing that just before you answered, and that was the problem. Should have done that yesterday as i kinda suspected that could be
    the reason.

    Thank you very much.

Now i have to deal with seagate. Mickey_684

Adding an external drive should not have any affect on the system as you've seen. Did you install any software with the drive?

    Desk top/ shortcut fixed.

Thanks to everyone who replied with help. The problem was with Seagates software.
I took the software off my PC and everything went back to normal. Then when I hooked up the Seagate drive, their software wouldn't load automatically and I tried to contact Seagate's support, but it was confusing and difficult, so took drive back
to store and exchanged it for a WD MYBOOK ESSENTIAL and I couldn't be happier

Did the WD MYBOOK install any software that may have the potential to cause problems in the future?

It installed software but I'm not aware if it could, but then any software has the potential to cause problems.
