    Weird Word 97 macro problem

    This is a strange one…

I’m using an old 97 Word version for many old macros I use. All of a sudden they stopped working when I either installed something or ? happened.

I debugged the problem in the macros not working to any VB command with “activedocument” in it (such as “activedocument.save” etc.). If I remove that command, the macro keeps working.

Everything worked fine (with that command) a few weeks ago. I’ve tried restoring my system, re-installing MS Word and deleting normal.dot so the system can make a new one if it might be corrupted. Nothing allows the activedocument command to process.

(And I only have one document open when I try using the macros.)

So it doesn’t appear to be the MS Word system or VB program within it. Any advice on why all macro commands with “activedocument” in it would suddenly stop working?

How are you using the macros with a new normal.dot. Are they in a global template in Word\Startup, or do you use them in an attached template?

Viewing your macro in the VB Editor, if you open Tools > References (note: all macros must be stopped for this menu to be available), is anything odd checked, or just the expected items?

(I can't think of any reasons for the problem off the top of my head.)

I take it back. When I just tried to make a new normal.dot, I can't. I tried deleting the old one but when I then try to creat a new macro with the old one gone (presumably in a newly-created normal.dot), I get the error message that it "cannot create macro" when I try to save the new macro (and there's no new normal.dot in the appropriate folder).

Does that offer any clues as to what might be wrong?

(Also I get the "could not open macro storage" message before it gets into either VB or editing a macro, although I can still edit macros after that message)...

And the VB Editor references show checked VB, Office 8.0 Object Library, World 8.0 Object Library and OLE (4 total checked).

That error message sounds vaguely familiar but I'd have to search around for old threads.

Do you have any security software that has an Office plugin? If so, make sure to disable that part.

Are you sure you deleted the correct 'Normal.dot'? It's location should be indicated under Tools|Options|File Locations > User templates - and you need to have Word closed when you do this.
