Pivot Table - Ordering Text Data (Excel 2000 )

Is there a way to order text data in a pivot table out of alphabetical order. For example, I have a pivot table that contains the following text fields, Prime, GA, and Overhead. The Pivot table orders the data as GA, Overhead, Prime (alphabetical order) however, I would like to see the data ordered as Prime, Overhead, GA. As a quick fix, I modified the data as 1-Prime, 2-Overhead, 3-GA so the data orders correctly. Any suggestions??

    Hi Gary,
If you create a custom list (under Tools-Options) with your items in the order you want, the Pivot Table should pick it up. You may need to sort the data using that list (using the Options button on the sort dialogbox) first, I can't remember.
    Hope that helps.

You could drag the fileds into the order you require, and they should stick even when the table is refreshed. If they do not stick just make sure the sort is set to manual. To that just click on the fieldname in the pivot table and select advanced and set the AutoSort to manual.

There does not appear to be a way to apply custom sort orders to Pivot tables. I would think your own quick fix is as good as any method.

Thanks for the input, great ideas, however, lets muddy the waters a little. I am launching the Pivot table from MS Access. The data I would like to sort (i.e, Prime, GA, Overhead, Fee) are part of a data field called cost element. Thus, when I drag and drop the Cost Element data field into the pivot table, I get the Prime, Overhead, GA fields. I do not think that the custom list will work in this process. Please tell me I am wrong.
    Regards,

    Gary
